As part of the ‘Visit Gangwon Year 2025-2026’, the province is showcasing two remarkable destinations for travel enthusiasts in July: Donghae City and Hongcheon County. These locations will host exciting festivals that capture the essence of summer, making them the perfect getaway.
Experience the Unique Mukho Doje Festival
From July 18 to 20, Donghae City will come alive with the Mukho Doje Festival, a unique cultural event celebrating Korean folklore. This festival is the only one of its kind in the country that is dedicated to the iconic creature known as the “doje,” or hobgoblin. Attendees can participate in a doje costume contest and indulge in a variety of activities featuring the region’s famous delicacy, dried pollack (meoktae). The festival promises stunning performances and vibrant festivities that will engage all five senses. Beyond the festival grounds, visitors can also explore Donghae’s scenic attractions, including the Doje Valley Sky Park, Haerang Observatory, Nongoldam-gil Road, Mukho Lighthouse, and Mangsang Beach, ensuring a memorable experience.
Enjoy the Starlit Hongcheon River Festival
The Hongcheon River will host the ‘Hongcheon River Starlit Music and Beer Festival’ from July 31 to August 3. A pre-event on July 30 will kick things off with festivities that set the stage for a lively celebration. Local breweries, including the Hite Brewery, will provide a range of craft beers, allowing guests to savor the flavors of the region. In addition to beer tastings, attendees can partake in unique activities like paddle boarding and stargazing yoga, making for an enchanting summer experience along the riverside.
Special Promotions for Festival Goers
To enhance the exciting experiences, the Gangwon Tourism Foundation has set up promotional programs in major cities such as Seoul and Busan to promote these festivals and the broader attractions of Gangwon Province. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of fantastic discount offers: in Donghae, a 50% discount on admission to the Mureung Valley is available throughout July. Meanwhile, Hongcheon will provide a 30% discount on entrance fees to Alpaca World and Wiba Finland for holders of the digital tourist resident card during July and August.
