REVERXE Album Review: Does EXO’s Latest Release Reignite the Spark?
EXO’s inclusion in my “K-Pop A-Z” feature guarantees a full review for every release. However, their recent efforts since 2018 have left me somewhat underwhelmed. Does their latest album, REVERXE, break this trend?
Opening Track: “Crown” Sets the Tone
The album opens with “Crown,” a decent EXO track that showcases tight harmonies and polished production. While it proves the group’s vocal prowess remains intact, it doesn’t quite capture the adrenaline rush that fans anticipate from an opener.
Spotlight on “Flatline”: Potential vs. Execution
“Flatline,” in particular, promises a refreshing rock vibe but remains subdued and unremarkable. Its atmospheric soundscape is certainly pleasant, and the strong vocal performances shine through. Yet, the track falls flat amidst midtempo songs and ballads, lacking the dynamic energy needed to make it stand out.
Lack of Impactful Melodies and Hooks
This absence of memorable hooks is disappointing. While “Flatline” could serve as solid album filler, it struggles to compete when surrounded by equally uninspired tunes. Despite its potential, the song feels lost within the album’s overall monotony.
Final Verdict: A Missed Opportunity?
In summary, REVERXE offers fleeting moments of intrigue but fails to recapture the energy and creativity that defined EXO’s earlier works. For a group with such a storied discography, this album feels like a missed opportunity rather than a triumphant return.
