Essential Jeju Island Travel Guide 2025 for First-Time Visitors

First trip to Jeju Island? This guide covers everything from airport arrival to transport, SIM cards, currency, car rental, and accommodation tips.

Welcome to Jeju Island

Jeju Island is one of Korea’s most beloved destinations, offering a serene escape with its UNESCO-listed Hallasan Mountain, pristine beaches, unique volcanic landscapes, and fresh seafood. Unlike the bustling metropolises of Seoul or Busan, Jeju is a nature-focused retreat with excellent airport access and well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Arrival & Airport Guide

Most travelers reach Jeju via domestic flights from Incheon (ICN), Gimpo (GMP), or Busan (PUS) to Jeju International Airport (CJU). The Gimpo–Jeju flight takes about one hour, with dozens of daily departures. From the airport to Jeju City, a taxi ride takes around 15 minutes (₩10,000–15,000), and airport buses also run frequently. To Seogwipo, buses and taxis take roughly one hour (around ₩35,000).

SIM, eSIM, Wi-Fi

Upon arrival, you’ll find SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ booths in the arrivals hall. You can purchase a physical SIM or eSIM with your passport, with 5-day plans costing around ₩27,500–₩38,500. Pocket Wi-Fi rentals are also available and cheaper if booked in advance. For eSIMs, services like Airalo or Klook let you buy and install via QR code before you land.

Currency & Payment

Currency exchange is available at airport counters, major bank branches in town, and ATMs (KEB Hana Bank, Woori Bank). Most restaurants and shops accept Visa, Mastercard, and Amex, but carrying some cash for small purchases is wise. Purchase a T-money transit card at convenience stores (CU, GS25) for about ₩2,500 and top it up as needed. Tipping isn’t customary, and many stores offer VAT refunds for foreigners. Note that KakaoPay and Naver Pay may have limited functionality for non-residents.

Transportation

Jeju’s public transit includes airport buses (No. 600), city buses, and tourist shuttle routes, all of which accept T-money cards. Bus stops display route numbers and next-arrival times, and apps like Naver Map or Kakao Map provide real-time schedules. Taxis are affordable and can be hailed via the Kakao T or UT apps; you can enter English addresses, but it’s helpful to have your destination written down in Korean.

Accommodation

Accommodation options range from hotels, guesthouses, pensions, and resorts to Airbnbs. Jeju City is ideal for airport access and nightlife, while Seogwipo’s Jungmun area offers luxury resorts and major attractions. For a quieter stay, consider guesthouses near Hamdeok or Hyeopjae Beach. Book through Booking.com, Agoda, or Airbnb, and rely on photos and reviews if listings are in Korean. Always confirm late-check-in procedures.

Car & Bicycle Rentals

To drive in Jeju, foreign visitors must carry their passport, an International Driving Permit (IDP), and their home country license. Major rental agencies like Lotte Rent-a-Car, Jeju Rentacar, and AJ Rent A Car are located near the airport—book online in advance and verify insurance coverage and age requirements (usually 21+). For electric vehicles, plan your charging stops ahead of time. Bicycles and e-scooters can be rented via the Elecle (Electric Bike) or Kakao T Bike apps; helmets are mandatory. Jeju’s coastal roads are bike-friendly but can be windy, so check the weather forecast. Always park in designated areas to avoid fines.

Local Tips

Recommended apps: Naver Map, Kakao Map, Papago Translator, Kakao T (taxi), KM Rental (car), and KMA Weather. Google Maps may not always have accurate bus-stop data. Learn a few basic Korean phrases: 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo – hello), 감사합니다 (gamsahamnida – thank you), 여기요 (yeogiyo – excuse me), 얼마에요? (eolmaeyo? – how much?). The best times to visit are spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November). Summer can be hot and rainy, while winter is dry and windy. Peak travel seasons are July–August school break, Lunar New Year, and Chuseok. For medical emergencies, dial 119 or 1339 for English-speaking assistance.
