Wallabong (Darae Oreum): Jeju’s Hidden Volcanic Cone
Overview
Located in Seogwipo City’s Andeok-myeon district, Wallabong is a lesser-known gem among Jeju’s oreum (volcanic cones). Its name, which hints at the shape of the rising moon, signifies the oreum’s gentle silhouette. Locally, it’s also called “Darae Oreum” due to the abundance of wild kiwi vines (darae) found across its terrain.
Hiking Trails & Panoramic Views
Wallabong offers tranquil hiking trails throughout all four seasons, making it a perfect destination for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. On clear days, hikers are greeted with southern views of the dramatic cliffs of Baksoogijeong and northern sights of the lush Andeok Valley. Trails are well-marked and suitable for beginners.
Hidden War Caves (jinji-donggul)
One of Wallabong’s most captivating aspects is its seven hidden war caves, referred to locally as “jinji-donggul.” Carved during a painful time in history, these caves are a quiet yet somber reminder of Korea’s past. As you descend from the summit, you’ll encounter one of these caves—an unspoken memorial, inviting reflection and respect.
Travel Tips & Access
This location is an ideal photo spot and healing retreat, far removed from crowded tourist centers. It’s also a representative example of Jeju’s “untact” travel destinations—suitable for socially distanced tourism.
Wallabong is accessible via local bus routes from Seogwipo Intercity Bus Terminal. Disembark at the Andeok area and walk or take a short taxi ride to reach the base of the oreum.
