Wimi Camellia Forest: Jeju’s Winter Gem
Nestled in the picturesque village of Wimi-ri, Namwon-eup, in the southern city of Seogwipo, the Wimi Camellia Forest is one of Jeju Island’s hidden treasures. Designated as Jeju Monument No. 39, this beautifully preserved camellia grove traces its origins back to the late 19th century.
History and Origin
The forest was created by local elder Grandmother Hyeon Maeng-chun (1858–1933), who planted camellias imported from Hallasan to shield her home from the harsh winter winds. Today, it stands as a lush forest of red blossoms that bloom brilliantly in the cool winter air, typically peaking from December through February.
